Short answer: Critical Mention and Cision both sell broadcast monitoring on a quote and neither prints a price. Critical Mention, an Onclusive company since 2022, is a broadcast specialist that builds custom packages by customer type and offers nonprofit rates. Cision sells broadcast as one part of CisionOne, alongside a 500,000+ journalist database and PR Newswire distribution, and Vendr's 107 recorded Cision purchases put the median at $12,625 a year. Buy Critical Mention if TV and radio clips are the main job. Buy Cision if you also need the database and the wire. If your coverage is online only, you need neither.
Packaging and coverage were read from criticalmention.com and cision.com in September 2026. Critical Mention has too few Vendr purchase records to support a benchmark, so this post quotes none for it.

Is Critical Mention cheaper than Cision?
There is no honest public answer, and any page that gives you a single number for Critical Mention is guessing. Vendr's Critical Mention record is seven purchases from two buyers, which describes two companies, not a market. The "$2,500 to $10,000 a year" range that circulates on review blogs has no source attached.
Cision is the only one of the two with a usable benchmark. Across 107 recorded purchases, Vendr puts the median at $12,625 a year, with most contracts between $3,150 and $30,368, and buyers negotiating an average of 25.53% off the first quote. That range is wide because a Cision contract can be a single monitoring seat or a full CisionOne license with distribution credits on top. Our Cision pricing breakdown walks through what moves a quote from the bottom of that range to the top.
So compare scope, not headlines. A Critical Mention package that is mostly broadcast clips and a Cision package that bundles broadcast, a database and PR Newswire releases are different purchases. Write one requirement list (U.S. markets by name, international markets, podcast needs, database seats, releases per year, users) and send the same list to both. Two quotes on identical scope are the only real price comparison you will get.
What drives a Critical Mention quote up?
Critical Mention's own pricing page sorts buyers into packages rather than tiers: large PR agencies, growing firms, individual brands and entities, and API partners, with special rates for nonprofits. Inside a package, the bill grows with what you add. The main levers are the broadcast markets you need beyond the U.S., podcast monitoring, seats on the media database, API access for your own systems, and, for agencies, the number of client accounts you run through it.
The clip side is where Critical Mention is generous. Its broadcast page promises unlimited cloud clip storage, the Wordplay editor for trimming HD clips, and white-label reports an agency can send to a client under its own logo. If you already pay per clip somewhere else, that is worth pricing out. The Critical Mention pricing page lists every product line Onclusive sells under the brand and which ones tend to be add-ons.
What drives a Cision quote up?
Cision does not sort buyers into public packages at all. Its pricing link lands on a request form that asks nine questions across three steps before anyone quotes. The quote then grows with the CisionOne modules you take: monitoring (online, print, broadcast, podcasts and social), the journalist database, PR Newswire distribution, analytics and reporting, and the social publishing tools. Distribution is usually the line that surprises people, because releases are bought on top of the platform.
The form's own consent text lists Cision's affiliated brands as Brandwatch, CisionOne and PR Newswire. That tells you something useful: a Cision rep can bundle social listening from Brandwatch into the same deal. It also means the Brandwatch product that absorbed Crimson Hexagon sits in the same group, so a "combined" quote across Cision and Brandwatch is one company pricing against itself.
Which is better for U.S. local TV news?
Both make the same core promise. Critical Mention says it clips every Nielsen Designated Market Area in the country, and Cision says it streams broadcast from all 210 U.S. DMAs. Both show Nielsen audience figures alongside clips. On paper, Cision's station count is slightly higher (2,700+ against 2,500+), but both counts include international stations, so the headline number tells you little about your own markets.
Test what you care about. Before either demo, pick three segments from last month where you know your brand aired, including one from a small market and one from a morning show. Ask each vendor to find them live in the demo and show the transcript, clip and audience figure. The one that finds all three faster, with a cleaner clip, is the better buy for you regardless of the station count. If the broadcast piece matters most and you want a third quote, TVEyes pricing covers the specialist that still offers a free trial.
If you'll be showing that coverage on newsroom or office screens, where comms teams often keep live broadcast running, a digital signage app that runs the screens you already own is a cheaper way to do it than buying dedicated hardware.
What does each one include beyond broadcast?
This is where the two part ways, and it's usually what decides the purchase.
Cision is a PR suite that includes broadcast. CisionOne bundles the 500,000+ contact database curated by in-house researchers, a media release builder, PR Newswire distribution, social scheduling and engagement, dashboards and branded reports, and iOS and Android apps. If your team pitches journalists every week and sends releases every month, Cision puts all of that in one login.
Critical Mention is a broadcast specialist that has added more around it. It sells online news monitoring in more than 90 languages, keyword search across Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and X, a media contact database, and newer AI brand visibility reporting. Deeper social listening is sold separately as Onclusive Social. There is no wire distribution in the product.
So the question isn't which platform is better. It is whether you want one vendor for monitoring, pitching and releases (Cision) or the best clip workflow and a lighter bill for the rest (Critical Mention).
Critical Mention or Cision: which should you buy?
| If this describes you | Buy |
|---|---|
| TV and radio clips are the main thing leadership asks for | Critical Mention |
| You are a nonprofit that needs broadcast coverage | Critical Mention, and ask for the nonprofit rate |
| You are an agency sending white-label broadcast reports to clients | Critical Mention |
| You pitch journalists weekly and distribute releases on a wire | Cision |
| You want social listening from Brandwatch in the same contract | Cision |
| Your coverage is online news, blogs, Reddit and social, not broadcast | Neither. Use a self-serve monitoring tool on a published price |
The Critical Mention side of this pairing gets compared with Meltwater too, and the same logic holds: see Critical Mention vs Meltwater pricing if that is your other shortlist. For the full list of quote-only PR suites and who owns which, see Cision competitors.
What if you only need online monitoring?
Then a broadcast quote is the wrong purchase. A large share of the cost of both products is the TV, radio and podcast capture, the clip storage, the Nielsen data and, on Cision's side, the database and wire. If what you actually need is to know when your brand, your executives or your competitors are mentioned in online news, on blogs, on Reddit, on X, LinkedIn, TikTok or YouTube, and whether the tone is turning, that is sold by the month.
EyeOut does exactly that part. It collects mentions across the web, news and social platforms in real time, reads each one for sentiment and theme, and alerts you when volume or tone spikes against the normal baseline. Plans are $59, $149 and $399 a month billed yearly, or $79, $189 and $499 month to month, with no quote, no demo and no annual contract. It does not monitor TV or radio, and it won't pretend to. For online news specifically, the news monitoring tool page shows what that coverage looks like.
Questions to ask both vendors before you sign
- Which U.S. markets and stations are included by name, and which cost extra?
- How long are clips, transcripts and podcast files kept, and can we download them?
- How many users are included, and what does each additional seat cost?
- Is the API included, and at what volume?
- For Cision: how many PR Newswire releases are included, and to which circuits?
- For Critical Mention: which Onclusive products are in the package, and which are add-ons?
- What is the renewal notice period, and is the renewal increase capped in writing?
Get the answers in the order form, not in an email. The renewal cap in particular is the clause most buyers regret skipping.
