Share of voice tool that measures your slice of the conversation

The short answer

A share of voice tool measures how much of the conversation in your market belongs to you versus your competitors, turning a vague sense of momentum into a number you can track. EyeOut calculates share of voice across web, news, X, Reddit, Instagram, forums, podcasts and review sites, weighs it by sentiment so loud but negative rivals do not look like winners, and shows how campaigns move it over time. It is self-serve, from $59 per month billed yearly, with no annual lock-in.

Share of voice, explained

How share of voice is calculated and why sentiment weighting matters

The questions marketing teams ask before they report share of voice, answered directly.

Share of voice is the cleanest available answer to a question executives ask constantly and marketing usually answers with adjectives: are we winning attention in this market. The basic calculation is simple. Count mentions of your brand, count mentions of your tracked competitors, and express yours as a percentage of the total. What makes it useful rather than decorative is everything around that arithmetic.

The first refinement is the competitor set. Share of voice is meaningless in the abstract because it depends entirely on who is in the denominator. A set of three genuine rivals gives you a number that moves when your market position moves. Add a category giant that outspends everyone and your share becomes a small, stable number that tells you nothing. Define the set as the companies that appear on the same shortlists as you, and keep it fixed, because changing it mid-year breaks the comparison you built the metric for.

The second refinement is sentiment weighting. Raw volume treats a wave of complaints as a win, which is how a company in the middle of a public problem posts its best share-of-voice month of the year. Weighting by sentiment prevents you from reporting a crisis as momentum.

How do you calculate share of voice?

Divide your brand mentions by the total mentions of your brand plus your tracked competitors over the same period, then multiply by 100. The number only means something if the competitor set is deliberate and fixed, and if you weight by sentiment so negative volume does not read as market strength.

What is a good share of voice percentage?

There is no universal benchmark, because it depends entirely on how many competitors are in your set and how concentrated your category is. In a set of four roughly equal players, anything above 25 percent is outperforming. The useful reading is the trend line for your own number, not a comparison to someone else's.

What is the difference between share of voice and share of market?

Share of voice measures attention, the portion of the conversation about your category that is about you. Share of market measures revenue. They are related but they move at different speeds, and share of voice tends to lead: attention shifts before purchasing does, which is what makes it a forward-looking metric rather than a lagging one.

How often should you measure share of voice?

Track it continuously and report it monthly. Daily readings are mostly noise, since a single busy news day swings the number. Monthly gives you enough volume to be stable while still catching a real shift within a reporting cycle, and it lines up with how campaigns are planned and reviewed.

Can you measure share of voice for a specific channel?

Yes, and it is often more actionable than the overall figure. Splitting share of voice by channel shows where you actually compete: you may lead on X, lag badly on Reddit, and be invisible in podcasts. That tells you where to put effort far more precisely than a single blended percentage.

Good questions

Questions about share of voice

EyeOut measures your brand mentions as a share of total mentions for you and your tracked competitors across every channel, then weighs sentiment so the metric reflects quality of conversation, not just raw volume.
Yes. You can see your share overall and broken down by channel, so you know whether you lead on X but lag on Reddit, for example, and can direct your effort to where you are losing ground.
