Short answer: Critical Mention and Meltwater both sell on custom quotes and neither prints a price. The difference is what you are paying for. Critical Mention, owned by Onclusive since 2022, is a broadcast specialist: more than 2,500 TV and radio stations and clips from every Nielsen DMA in the U.S. Meltwater is a capability suite where you assemble media intelligence, social listening, AI visibility tracking and media relations, with a median signed contract of $25,800 a year across 126 purchases. Buy Critical Mention if TV and radio coverage is the job. Buy Meltwater if the job is broad media and social intelligence. If the job is online brand monitoring only, you need neither.

Packaging and coverage were read from criticalmention.com and meltwater.com in September 2026. Contract figures are Vendr private SaaS purchase data, not vendor price lists or public procurement records.

Is Critical Mention cheaper than Meltwater?

Nobody can say that honestly with public data, and pages that do are guessing. Meltwater's figure is solid: Vendr's median is $25,800 a year across 126 signed contracts, with most deals between about $5,375 and $56,993. Critical Mention's Vendr page rests on 7 purchases from just 2 buyers, which describes those two companies, not the market.

What you can say is where each quote comes from. A Critical Mention package grows with the broadcast markets you watch, podcasts, the media database, API access and the number of client accounts. A Meltwater quote grows with the capabilities you pick, the sources and regions, data volume, users, integrations and onboarding. If you only need a handful of U.S. TV markets, a focused Critical Mention package can come in well under a full Meltwater suite. If you need global online and social coverage too, the comparison flips. Our Critical Mention pricing page breaks the package down product by product, and the Meltwater pricing guide does the same for Meltwater's four plans.

Which is better for TV and radio monitoring?

Critical Mention, because broadcast is the product rather than one input among many. Its broadcast page claims more than 2,500 TV and radio stations worldwide, clips from every Nielsen Designated Market Area in the U.S., coverage in Europe and the Middle East, unlimited cloud storage for clips, instant alerts and white-label reports. The Wordplay editor trims HD clips and lets you highlight a section of a transcript for sentiment.

Meltwater does monitor broadcast. Its media intelligence page says it tracks news, social, forums and broadcast in a single platform, and its media monitoring page cites more than 400,000 traditional media sources, over 200 million online publications and more than 20,000 podcasts. But it does not publish a TV or radio station count or a market list, and it says retention and depth vary by package, source and region. If a local TV segment in a mid-sized market is the thing your CEO asks about on Monday, confirm in writing that the market is in the quote before you sign either one.

Which is better for online news and social listening?

Meltwater, on breadth. Social listening is a named capability on its pricing page, next to media intelligence, AI visibility tracking and media relations, and its Mira AI assistant is included on every plan at increasing depth. Critical Mention covers online news in 90+ languages and keyword search across Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and Twitter, but its own social page points buyers who need deeper listening to Onclusive Social, a separate Onclusive product.

That matters for budgeting. With Critical Mention you may end up with two Onclusive line items for what Meltwater sells as one capability. Ask each vendor to itemize.

What does each one include beyond monitoring?

Both sell a journalist database. Critical Mention says its media contact database holds millions of records and vets requested changes within 24 hours. Meltwater sells media relations as a capability, with influencer marketing added on Enterprise and Agency plans. Both now also track how AI assistants describe your brand: Critical Mention sells AI Brand Visibility with GEO Analytics across ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, Claude and Perplexity, and Meltwater sells AI Visibility Tracking.

Both suites track competitors' coverage, but neither is built to watch a rival's website. If what you actually need is an alert when a competitor changes its pricing page or launches a product, a competitor monitoring tool that tracks website and price changes does that job without a media contract.

Is Critical Mention part of Meltwater?

No. Critical Mention belongs to Onclusive, which acquired it in 2022, and every page on criticalmention.com is signed "Critical Mention, An Onclusive Company". Meltwater is a separate company owned by Marlin Equity Partners and Altor. The two compete directly. If ownership maps matter to your procurement team, our who owns the social listening tools guide lays out which brands answer to which parent.

What should you ask each vendor before signing?

Ask both for the same three things so the quotes are comparable. First, an itemized quote: broadcast markets, online news, social, podcasts, media database, AI visibility and API as separate lines. Second, the term and renewal rules: contract length, the notice period to cancel, and whether the renewal price is capped. Meltwater states a 12-month minimum on most deals; Critical Mention states nothing on its site, so get it in writing. Third, a test on your own coverage: give each vendor a segment or article you know ran last month and watch how fast they find it.

Negotiate on the Meltwater side with the data you have. Vendr reports buyers typically land about 15% below the opening quote. For Critical Mention there is no reliable benchmark, which is a reason to get a competing broadcast quote before you negotiate.

When you need neither

A lot of teams shortlisting these two do not need broadcast clips or a journalist database at all. They need to know when their brand, products or competitors get mentioned online, whether the tone is turning, and to hear about a spike before it becomes a crisis. That is online news and brand monitoring, and it does not need an annual media contract.

EyeOut covers the web, news, X, Reddit, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube and review sites in one feed, reads every mention for sentiment, and flags unusual spikes. Plans start at $59 a month billed yearly, $79 month to month, with seats included. It does not monitor TV or radio, and we would rather you buy Critical Mention for that than pretend otherwise. If your comparison also includes Cision, see Cision vs Meltwater pricing.
