Short answer: Meltwater and Muck Rack are both quote-only PR platforms, and neither prints a price. Muck Rack is the cheaper and narrower purchase: a journalist database, pitching and online media monitoring, with a Vendr median of $13,000 a year across 80 signed contracts. Meltwater is the broader and pricier one: media intelligence, social listening, AI visibility tracking and media relations assembled into one contract, with a Vendr median of $25,800 a year across 126 contracts and a stated 12-month minimum. Buy Muck Rack if pitching reporters is the job. Buy Meltwater if you need monitoring, social and analytics in one suite. If the real job is only monitoring, you do not need either contract.

Plan names, core features and add-ons were read from muckrack.com/pricing and meltwater.com/en/pricing in September 2026. Contract figures are Vendr private SaaS purchase data, not vendor price lists or public procurement records.

How much does Muck Rack cost compared to Meltwater?

Muck Rack typically costs about half of what Meltwater does. Across 80 recorded contracts, Vendr puts the Muck Rack median at $13,000 a year, with most deals between roughly $8,000 and $20,860. The Meltwater median is $25,800 across 126 contracts, and its range runs much wider, from about $5,375 to $56,993, because a Meltwater quote can be anything from a single capability for a small team to a multi-region suite.

The wider Meltwater range matters more than the medians. A small comms team buying one capability can land near the bottom of it, below a Muck Rack Standard deal. A brand buying media intelligence plus social listening across several markets lands at the top, well past anything Muck Rack sells. So the honest comparison is not "which one is cheaper" but "what am I asking each of them to do." Our separate breakdowns of what Muck Rack actually costs and what Meltwater contracts cost go line by line through each quote.

What each platform is built to do

Muck Rack is organized around reporters. The core plan on every tier is the journalist and outlet database, list building, pitching from Gmail or Outlook, PressPal.ai for drafting, media monitoring with email and Slack alerts, and coverage reports. Everything past that is an add-on: print and broadcast monitoring, social listening, press release distribution, the API, analyst services and Generative Pulse, its AI visibility product. Muck Rack's own Meltwater comparison page leans on the same point, arguing that customers find its database more accurate and its interface easier to learn, and that podcast monitoring is included with select plans rather than sold separately.

Meltwater is organized around capabilities. Its pricing page asks you to choose from media intelligence, social listening, AI visibility tracking and media relations, adds influencer marketing on Enterprise and Agency, and layers its Mira AI assistant on every tier at increasing depth. It also owns more of the stack than it used to: Meltwater bought Linkfluence in 2021 and folded it into the brand in 2023, which is why teams on Radarly now renew on a Meltwater contract. The price follows the list you build, which is why two companies on the same plan name can pay very different amounts.

Is Muck Rack better than Meltwater for PR teams?

For a PR team whose main job is pitching journalists, Muck Rack is usually the better buy. Its database and outreach workflow are the product, the core plan includes monitoring and reporting, and the median contract is roughly half of Meltwater's. Teams that mostly measure earned media and pitch reporters rarely use enough of Meltwater's broader capability list to justify the difference.

Meltwater is the stronger choice when the PR team is one of several users. If marketing needs social listening, leadership wants a single media intelligence dashboard across regions, and someone is tracking how the brand shows up in AI answers, one Meltwater contract can replace three separate tools. That is the case where the higher median is earned rather than paid for idle modules.

Which is better for media monitoring, Meltwater or Muck Rack?

Meltwater is the broader monitoring platform, and Muck Rack is the more focused one. Meltwater treats media intelligence and social listening as its core capabilities and prices coverage by source, region and data volume. Muck Rack includes online media monitoring and alerts on every plan, but social listening and print and broadcast monitoring are both paid add-ons, so its default monitoring scope is narrower.

That split creates a trap in both directions. A Muck Rack buyer who later needs social coverage adds a line to the proposal. A Meltwater buyer who only needed news alerts can end up paying for a suite built around analytics. Before either call, write down which sources you actually need alerts from: news sites, X, Reddit, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, forums, podcasts, review sites. Then ask each vendor to price exactly that list.

Does Muck Rack or Meltwater have a free trial?

Neither offers a self-serve free trial. Meltwater's pricing FAQ says so directly and offers a guided demo instead. Muck Rack's pricing page lists no trial and routes every plan to a request for a customized proposal. In both cases you see the product in a demo, receive a quote, and sign an agreement, which at Meltwater usually means 12 months.

If your team needs hands-on time before committing, ask for a time-limited sandbox in writing during the sales process, and confirm which sources, users and saved searches it includes, so the test reflects what you would actually be buying.

What drives each quote up

The levers are similar but they weigh differently. For Muck Rack, the biggest single driver is the number of users, which the vendor names first, followed by the add-ons. Social listening, print and broadcast, and distribution each turn a $13,000 database contract into something much larger. For Meltwater, the driver is the capability list, then the breadth of sources and regions, then data volume, users and integrations. Meltwater's FAQ also warns that complex or enterprise setups may carry a one-time implementation fee on top of the annual price.

Buyers on Vendr negotiate around 15% off Meltwater's first number. Ask both vendors for the quote broken out by module so you can see what each piece costs, and ask for usage data at renewal so you can drop the pieces nobody opened. If the budget conversation keeps circling back to headcount rather than software, it may be cheaper to hire a PR coordinator to run a lighter stack than to buy a heavier platform nobody has time to use.

When you need neither contract

Both platforms sell a PR workflow, and monitoring is one part of it. Plenty of US brands, SaaS companies and agencies are shopping for Meltwater or Muck Rack because they want to know, quickly and reliably, when their brand, products or competitors are mentioned, and whether the tone is turning. They do not pitch reporters every week, and they do not need a journalist database.

For that job, a monitoring platform with a published price is the cheaper and faster purchase. EyeOut watches news, blogs, X, Reddit, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube and review sites in real time, reads every mention for sentiment, and alerts you by email, or in Slack from the Growth plan, when volume or tone spikes. Plans are $59, $149 and $399 a month billed yearly, monthly billing is available, and there is no 12-month minimum. EyeOut does not include a journalist database, pitching or press release distribution, so it replaces the monitoring piece of these contracts, not the outreach piece. How to choose

  • Your team pitches reporters most weeks: Muck Rack. Price the core plan first and add social listening only if someone will use it.
  • Several departments need media, social and AI visibility data in one place: Meltwater. Build the capability list before the demo and get each module priced separately.
  • You also need wire distribution and the largest contact database: add Cision to the shortlist; our Cision vs Meltwater pricing comparison covers that pairing.
  • You only need to know when you are mentioned: neither. A self-serve monitoring plan does that job for a fraction of either median.

Frequently asked questions

Is Muck Rack cheaper than Meltwater?

Usually, yes. Vendr's purchase data puts the median Muck Rack contract at $13,000 a year and the median Meltwater contract at $25,800. Meltwater's range starts lower, about $5,375, so a very small single-capability Meltwater deal can undercut Muck Rack, but a typical Meltwater contract costs roughly twice as much.

Can you use Muck Rack and Meltwater together?

Some large teams do, using Muck Rack for journalist outreach and Meltwater for monitoring and analytics. It is an expensive pairing, often above $35,000 a year at the medians. Check first whether one platform's add-ons cover the other's job, because paying for monitoring twice is the most common waste in this setup.

Do Muck Rack and Meltwater require annual contracts?

Yes, in practice. Meltwater's FAQ states that most agreements are annual with a 12-month minimum. Muck Rack sells through a customized proposal and offers no self-serve monthly billing on its pricing page. Plan on a year with either vendor.
