Muck Rack competitors: pricing, monitoring and alternatives compared
The short answer
Muck Rack's competitors split by which half of the platform you actually use. For the journalist database and pitching, the realistic rivals are Cision, Meltwater, Propel and the Semrush AI PR Toolkit, which is what Prowly became. For coverage monitoring and reporting alone, focused tools such as EyeOut and Brand24 publish prices from $59 and $199 a month. The money gap is large: Vendr puts the median Muck Rack contract at $13,000 a year across 80 purchases, Cision at $12,625 and Meltwater at $25,800. Semrush lists its PR plans at $149 to $499 a month, while Muck Rack, Cision, Meltwater and Propel publish no price at all.
Most people searching for Muck Rack competitors are holding a renewal quote. The contract is due, the number has gone up, and someone has asked whether there is a cheaper way to do the same job. The difficulty is that Muck Rack is not one job. It is a journalist database and pitching workflow sitting on top of a monitoring and reporting product, and the right competitor for one half is often the wrong one for the other.
Muck Rack does not make the comparison easier. Its pricing page, re-read on September 10, 2026, names three plans, Starter, Standard and Premier, and prices none of them. Every plan ends in Contact us or Request Demo, and the page explains that pricing depends on factors specific to your team, including the number of users. Social listening, press release distribution, print and broadcast monitoring and the API are listed separately as add-ons.
This page does the sorting for you. It groups the realistic competitors by which half of Muck Rack they replace, shows the published price where one exists and Vendr contract data where it does not, and is plain about where EyeOut fits, which is the monitoring half only.

Why it works
Three questions that decide your Muck Rack shortlist
Do you pitch, or do you only track coverage
Muck Rack earns its price on the journalist database and the pitching workflow. If your team sends pitches every week, your competitors are the other database vendors. If the tool mostly tells you what ran and how it read, you are shopping in a far cheaper market that publishes its prices.
Which add-ons are already in your quote
Muck Rack lists social listening, press release distribution, print and broadcast monitoring and its API as add-ons rather than plan features. Two quotes that look similar can differ by three of those line items, so compare the module list before you compare the total.
How much room the first quote leaves
Vendr records Muck Rack deals from $8,000 to $20,860 a year with average negotiated savings of about 17 percent, and Cision buyers average about 25.5 percent. A genuine competitive evaluation is worth real money even if you end up renewing.

Who competes with Muck Rack, what each one costs, and which half of the platform it replaces
Muck Rack plan names, modules and add-ons were read from muckrack.com/pricing on September 10, 2026, and the Semrush AI PR Toolkit, Prezly, Propel and Brand24 pricing pages were read the same day. Meltwater and Cision pricing behavior was verified first-party on September 1, 2026. Contract medians, ranges and sample sizes are Vendr figures aggregated from real purchases, last updated February 2026.
Start with how Muck Rack is built, because it explains every quote. The core platform bundles a media database and pitching, media monitoring and alerts with podcast monitoring, reporting and analytics, a Curation Engine, an Inbound Media Manager for incoming press requests, and Generative Pulse, which tracks how AI assistants describe your brand. Print and broadcast monitoring, social listening, press release distribution, the API and analyst-led media intelligence services sit outside the plan as add-ons.
That structure is why the competitor set splits cleanly. Cision, Meltwater, Propel and the Semrush AI PR Toolkit all sell a journalist database, so they compete for the whole platform. Prezly competes for the newsroom and pitching workflow. EyeOut and Brand24 sell no database at all and compete only for monitoring and reporting.
The second split is transparency. Of the vendors below that sell a journalist database, only Semrush publishes a price you can read, from $149 a month billed annually. Muck Rack, Cision, Meltwater and Propel all route you to a demo, which is why the contract table leans on Vendr rather than on list prices that do not exist. Read the Vendr sample sizes too: 80 Muck Rack purchases, 107 for Cision and 126 for Meltwater are large enough to budget from.

Where each Muck Rack competitor is stronger, and where it is not
| Vendor | Strongest at | Weakest at | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Muck Rack | Journalist database and pitching in one workflow, plus an inbound press request queue and AI visibility tracking | No published price, and social listening, distribution, print and broadcast and the API are add-ons | Comms teams that pitch every week and want one system for it |
| Cision | End-to-end PR with PR Newswire distribution and the widest contract range in the set | Owns Brandwatch and BuzzSumo, so a shortlist can carry one parent company twice | Enterprise PR departments that also need distribution |
| Meltwater | Earned media breadth across print, broadcast and podcasts | Social listening is a separately selected, unpriced capability, and the median contract is roughly double Muck Rack | Global comms teams where print and broadcast matter |
| Semrush AI PR Toolkit | The only database vendor here with a readable price and a self-serve trial | Monitoring starts on Pro at $279, each plan includes one user, and extra seats cost $20 a month each | Small in-house teams that already work in Semrush |
| Propel | Database, pitching and monitoring alerts with seat limits written on the plan | No published price, and Premium, its largest named plan, stops at 7 users | Small and mid-size PR teams wanting a Muck Rack-shaped product |
| Prezly | Branded newsrooms and a clean pitching workflow, priced in the open | Priced in euros, and no monitoring price on its pricing page | Brands whose main output is announcements and a newsroom |
| EyeOut | Published price, real-time monitoring on every plan, seats included, graded crisis alerts | No journalist database, no pitching, no release distribution, no print or broadcast | Teams whose Muck Rack seat is really a monitoring and reporting seat |
Who are Muck Rack's competitors?
For the full platform, the closest rivals are Cision, Meltwater, Propel and the Semrush AI PR Toolkit, all of which sell a journalist database alongside monitoring. Cision is the nearest on cost at a $12,625 Vendr median, Meltwater is roughly double at $25,800, and Semrush is the only one with a published price, from $149 a month billed annually.
Prezly competes for the newsroom and pitching workflow rather than the database. EyeOut and Brand24 compete only for monitoring and reporting, which is the right comparison if your team rarely pitches journalists and mainly needs to know what ran.
How much is Muck Rack?
Muck Rack does not publish a price, so the best evidence is contract data. Vendr puts the median Muck Rack contract at $13,000 a year across 80 purchases, with recorded deals from $8,000 to $20,860 and average negotiated savings of about 17 percent. That is roughly $1,083 a month at the median, sold as an annual contract.
The quote moves with seats and add-ons. Muck Rack's own pricing page says pricing depends on factors including the number of users, and it lists social listening, press release distribution, print and broadcast monitoring and the API as add-ons on top of Starter, Standard or Premier.
Does Muck Rack publish its pricing?
No. The pricing page names three plans, Starter for individuals, Standard for most PR teams and Premier for enterprises and advanced teams, but shows no figure for any of them. Every plan ends in a Contact us or Request Demo button.
That is normal for this tier of PR software. Cision, Meltwater and Propel also publish nothing. Among vendors that sell a journalist database, the Semrush AI PR Toolkit is the exception, with Base, Pro and Business plans listed at $149, $279 and $499 a month billed annually.
Is Muck Rack better than Cision?
They cost almost the same at the median and differ in shape. Vendr puts Muck Rack at $13,000 a year and Cision at $12,625, but Cision's recorded range runs from $3,150 to $30,368 against Muck Rack's $8,000 to $20,860, and Cision buyers negotiate more off the first quote, about 25.5 percent on average against 17.
Muck Rack is the narrower, more standardized contract, built around pitching. Cision brings PR Newswire distribution and a wider enterprise footprint, and it owns Brandwatch and BuzzSumo, which matters if either one is also on your shortlist.
What is a cheaper alternative to Muck Rack?
It depends which half you need. If you need a journalist database, the cheapest option with a readable price is the Semrush AI PR Toolkit at $149 a month billed annually for one user, rising to $279 once you want online media monitoring. That is $3,348 a year on Pro against a $13,000 Muck Rack median.
If you only need coverage monitoring and reporting, the market is cheaper again. EyeOut starts at $59 a month billed yearly with seats included, and Brand24 at $199. Neither includes a journalist database, pitching or release distribution.
Is the Semrush AI PR Toolkit the same as Prowly?
Yes. Prowly's own site now says Prowly is the Semrush AI PR Toolkit, and its old pricing URL lands on that homepage rather than a price list. The toolkit is sold in three plans billed annually: Base at $149 with the media database and pitching, Pro at $279 adding online media monitoring, and Business at $499 with 50,000 monitored media mentions a month and competitor media tracking.
Each plan includes one user, and additional users cost $20 a month each. Any comparison still quoting Prowly's standalone plans predates the change.
Does Muck Rack include social listening?
Not in the core plans. Muck Rack's pricing page lists social listening as an add-on, alongside press release distribution, print and broadcast monitoring, the Muck Rack API and media intelligence services. The core platform covers media monitoring and alerts, including podcast monitoring, plus reporting and analytics.
So if your renewal quote includes social listening, it is a separate line item worth pricing on its own. That is often the point where a dedicated monitoring tool, which includes social sources in its base price, becomes the cheaper way to cover the same ground.
