Hootsuite social listening: which plan includes it, and what it costs

The short answer

Hootsuite social listening is sold as Lumen, the insights and listening module inside Hootsuite Social OS, and the version most buyers picture is not on any plan that publishes a price. As of August 25, 2026 Hootsuite publishes Standard at $99, Professional at $199 and Advanced at $399 per user per month on annual billing, and puts advanced listening in the custom priced Enterprise tier, where its own plan page lists the benefit verbatim as "Uncover trends across social, digital, and AI with advanced listening". The published plans give you brand and competitor monitoring streams inside a publishing suite, which is a narrower job than listening. Hootsuite also owns Talkwalker, and Talkwalker now sells under the same name: its pricing page is headed "Lumen by Talkwalker" with Core, Analyze and Business tiers and no figure attached to any of them.

Buyers searching for Hootsuite social listening are almost always asking one of two questions. Does Hootsuite do listening at all, and if it does, which plan do I have to buy. The answer is yes and Enterprise, and the gap between those two words is the whole reason this page exists.

Hootsuite restructured its product line into what it now calls Hootsuite Social OS, a suite of five named modules: Perch for content creation, planning and publishing, Nest for the social inbox and customer care, Wisdom for its AI layer, Parliament for employee advocacy, and Lumen for insights and listening. Lumen is the answer to the search. Its own product page describes it as tracking billions of conversations, monitoring brand mentions, sentiment, reviews and emerging risks in real time, and measuring brand health, share of voice and competitive performance. That is a real listening product and it is not the thing your $99 Standard seat buys.

What the published plans do include is worth being precise about, because it is not nothing. Standard, at $99 per user per month on annual billing, lists "Monitor your brand and competitors" among its features and connects up to 10 social accounts. Professional at $199 adds unlimited accounts, inbox automation and trend forecasting up to 90 days out. Advanced at $399 adds approvals, message routing and team performance reporting. Every one of those is a publishing and team workflow upgrade. The listening capability steps up only once, at Enterprise, which is quote priced.

This page lays out what each Hootsuite plan actually contains, what social listening on Hootsuite costs once you reach the tier that has it, and what the same job costs from vendors that sell listening as the product rather than as an upsell. Every Hootsuite figure below was read from hootsuite.com/plans on August 25, 2026. Where a vendor publishes nothing, this page says so instead of estimating.

Why it works

Three things to check before you buy Hootsuite for social listening

Which tier the listening sits on

Hootsuite publishes prices for Standard, Professional and Advanced, and none of those three lists advanced listening. It appears once, in the Enterprise column, which carries no figure and routes to a demo request. If listening is why you are buying, the advertised seat price is not your price.

Whether you also need publishing

Hootsuite is a publishing suite with listening attached. If your team schedules posts, runs a shared inbox and needs approvals, that bundle is genuinely useful. If nobody on your team publishes, you are paying per seat for a calendar and an inbox in order to reach the monitoring underneath.

Who you are actually negotiating with

Hootsuite owns Talkwalker, and both now sell listening under the Lumen name. Shortlisting Hootsuite for publishing and Talkwalker for deep listening, then playing one against the other, means negotiating with one company through two doors.

What it handles

Watched, read and flagged in real time

EyeOut watches every channel for your brand, scores each mention for sentiment and emotion, rolls it up into share of voice and a daily digest, and alerts you the second a real spike begins.

  • A published price for listening itself, at $59 a month billed yearly
  • Seats included on every plan, so visibility is not rationed by headcount
  • Real-time collection at entry level, not reserved for an enterprise tier
  • Web, news, X, Reddit, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, forums, podcasts and review sites in one view
  • AI sentiment, emotion and theme on every mention, plus graded crisis alerts

The plan breakdown

Social listening on Hootsuite: what each plan includes, and where Hootsuite social media listening actually starts

Every Hootsuite figure and feature line below was read from hootsuite.com/plans on August 25, 2026. Talkwalker tier names were read from its own pricing page the same day. Contract figures are from Vendr, which records real signed deals.

The confusing part of Hootsuite social listening is that Hootsuite uses two different words and buyers hear one. Monitoring appears on the cheapest published plan. Listening appears only on Enterprise. They are not synonyms in Hootsuite's own copy and the difference is worth roughly the whole price of the contract.

Monitoring, in the Standard sense, means streams. You build a column for your brand name, a column for a competitor, a column for a hashtag, and you read what comes in. It is useful, it is immediate, and it is essentially a search feed with a nice interface. What it does not do is score everything for sentiment across the open web, cluster themes for you, baseline what normal volume looks like for each source, or tell you that today is abnormal.

Listening, in the Lumen sense, is that second set. Hootsuite's own Lumen page promises exactly it: billions of conversations tracked, sentiment and reviews and emerging risks monitored in real time, brand health and share of voice measured over time, trends and influencers surfaced. Read the plan table next to that page and you find the capability gated at the tier with no number on it.

The practical consequence is a budgeting one. A five person marketing team costing out Hootsuite for listening will price Advanced, because $399 sounds like the top of the published range, and arrive at $1,995 a month for five seats. That team has not bought listening. They have bought approvals and routing. The listening conversation starts with a demo request and a custom quote, and the vendor on the other side of it also owns Talkwalker.

One more thing that shapes the decision and rarely makes it into a comparison. Hootsuite prices per user. Listening is the function most likely to be needed occasionally by people who are not social media managers: a founder during a launch, a support lead when complaints cluster, a PR contact when a story runs, a product manager checking reaction to a release. Per-seat pricing makes each of those logins a line item, so in practice the access gets rationed to the two or three people who publish daily, and the people who most need the early warning do not have a login. That is a structural argument for buying listening from a vendor that includes seats, and it applies whether or not you also keep Hootsuite for publishing.

None of this makes Hootsuite a bad product. It is a mature publishing suite with a 14 day free trial that does not ask for a credit card, and if your team publishes at volume the bundle is reasonable. It makes it an expensive way to buy listening alone, and the tables below put numbers on how expensive.

Does Hootsuite have social listening?

Yes, but not on the plans that publish a price. Hootsuite sells listening as Lumen, the insights and listening module inside Hootsuite Social OS, and its plan page names advanced listening only under the Enterprise tier, which is custom priced. Standard at $99, Professional at $199 and Advanced at $399 per user per month do not list a listening capability.

What those three do list is monitoring. Standard says "Monitor your brand and competitors", which in practice means keyword and competitor streams you read yourself rather than sentiment scoring, theme clustering and anomaly alerting across the open web.

How much is Hootsuite social listening?

Hootsuite does not publish a price for it. Advanced listening sits in the Enterprise tier, which shows "Custom" and a demo request in place of a figure, so the honest answer is that it costs whatever your quote comes back at. The published plans below it are $99, $199 and $399 per user per month on annual billing.

For a sense of the range, procurement data from Vendr, which records real signed contracts, puts the median Hootsuite deal at about $12,685 a year across a sample of roughly 74 to 97 purchases, with a range from around $5,600 to $41,137. Treat that as the shape of the market rather than a quote you can hold anyone to.

Is Hootsuite a social listening tool?

Hootsuite is a social media management suite that includes a listening module. The distinction matters when you are comparing it against a dedicated listening platform, because the seat price you see buys publishing, scheduling, a shared inbox and reporting on the accounts you own.

A dedicated listening tool inverts that. It has no publishing calendar and no inbox, and everything you pay for goes into finding mentions across the open web, scoring them and alerting on them. Neither shape is better in the abstract. It depends entirely on whether your team publishes.

What is Hootsuite Lumen?

Lumen is the name Hootsuite now gives its insights and listening product inside Hootsuite Social OS, alongside Perch for publishing, Nest for the inbox, Wisdom for AI and Parliament for employee advocacy. Its product page describes tracking billions of conversations, monitoring brand mentions, sentiment, reviews and emerging risks in real time, and measuring brand health, share of voice and competitive performance.

The same name now appears on Talkwalker, which Hootsuite owns. Talkwalker's pricing page is headed "Lumen by Talkwalker" and offers Core, Analyze and Business tiers with the instruction to pick a plan and get a custom quote, with no figure on any tier.

What is the difference between social monitoring and social listening on Hootsuite?

In Hootsuite's own plan copy they are two different things at two different prices. Monitoring appears on Standard at $99 a seat and means watching streams for your brand name and your competitors. Listening appears only on Enterprise and is described as uncovering trends across social, digital and AI.

The practical difference is who does the reading. Monitoring hands you a filtered feed. Listening scores every mention for sentiment and theme, measures share of voice over time, and tells you when volume or tone is abnormal for a given source rather than waiting for you to notice.

What is a cheaper alternative to Hootsuite for social listening?

If listening is the reason you are buying and publishing is not, the cheapest credible published options are Awario at $29 a month, Mentionlytics at $49 and EyeOut at $59, all billed yearly. EyeOut includes seats on every plan and collects in real time at entry level, which is the spec most self-serve tools reserve for their $399 tier.

If you need publishing too, the comparison changes and Hootsuite's bundle is fair value. What does not work is buying a publishing suite in order to reach listening you then discover is on a tier above the one you priced.

Good questions

Questions about hootsuite social listening

Yes, and it is the most common way teams end up here. Hootsuite keeps the calendar, the shared inbox and the approvals your social team works in every day, and EyeOut covers the monitoring across web, news, X, Reddit, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, forums, podcasts and review sites, with seats included so the founder, the PR lead and the support supervisor all get a login. EyeOut does not publish or schedule anything, so the two do not overlap.
EyeOut is $59 a month billed yearly on Starter, $149 on Growth and $399 on Pro, with Enterprise custom. Seats are included rather than charged per user, so the price does not move when a fourth person needs visibility. A single Hootsuite Standard seat is $99 a month on annual billing and a single Advanced seat is $399, and neither includes advanced listening.
No, and it does not try to. EyeOut has no publishing calendar, no scheduling, no shared inbox and no approval workflow. If your team posts to social accounts, you still need a publishing tool. EyeOut replaces the listening half of the purchase, which is the half Hootsuite reserves for Enterprise.
