Short answer: Meltwater's competitors split into three tiers, and the cost gap between them is enormous. Its direct enterprise rivals are Cision, Brandwatch, Talkwalker and Sprinklr, none of which publish a price either: Vendr puts their median annual contracts at $12,625, $50,000, $27,370 and $127,490 against Meltwater's $25,800. Its mid-market rivals are Hootsuite, Sprout Social and Agorapulse, which publish per-seat prices but sell listening as an add-on or an Enterprise-only feature. Its self-serve rivals are Brand24, Mentionlytics and EyeOut, which publish real prices from $49 to $199 a month. Which tier is genuinely competing for your budget depends on whether you need print and broadcast coverage, because that is the one thing Meltwater does that the cheap tier does not attempt.
Last updated September 2026. Meltwater's plan structure and coverage claims were read from meltwater.com on September 1, 2026 and Sprinklr's pricing URL was re-checked on September 2, 2026. Contract figures are from Vendr, which publishes ranges taken from real signed deals rather than estimates.

Who are Meltwater's main competitors?
Meltwater's direct competitors are Cision, Brandwatch, Talkwalker and Sprinklr. All four sell quote-based enterprise platforms, all four refuse to publish a price, and all four are bought by the same person: a comms or insights lead who needs coverage across many sources and a report that survives a board meeting. Cision is the closest on media relations, Brandwatch on consumer research depth, Talkwalker on listening breadth and Sprinklr on running the whole customer operation in one place.
Below that sit the mid-market social suites, Hootsuite, Sprout Social and Agorapulse. They compete for the same budget without competing on the same job, because their listening layers are restricted. Below those sit the self-serve monitoring tools, Brand24, Mentionlytics and EyeOut, which compete only for the monitoring and alerting part of what Meltwater sells.
The reason this ordering matters is that Meltwater's real differentiator is not analysis, it is source coverage. Meltwater's own media monitoring page states more than 400,000 traditional media sources, over 200 million online publications, more than 20,000 podcasts and broadcast, plus APAC platforms including WeChat, Weibo, RED, Douyin, Toutiao, Naver, Kakao Talk and LINE. Almost no Western vendor carries that Asian list. If print clippings, broadcast mentions or Chinese and Korean social platforms genuinely appear in your reporting, the cheap tier is not a competitor at all and comparing on price is a category error.
Which Meltwater competitor is the cheapest?
Among the enterprise set, Cision is consistently the cheapest, with a Vendr median of $12,625 a year across 107 recorded purchases, roughly half Meltwater's $25,800. Cision buyers also negotiate hardest in this category, taking about 26 percent off the opening quote on average, against roughly 15 percent for Meltwater.
Among vendors that publish anything at all, Mentionlytics at $49 a month and EyeOut at $59 a month billed yearly are the floor, with Brand24 at $199. The honest framing is that these are not discounted Meltwater, they are a different product. They cover web, news, social, forums, podcasts and review sites, and they do not carry print, broadcast, a journalist database, newswire distribution or an influencer marketing module. For a marketing team that wants to know who mentioned the brand this morning and whether anything is escalating, that missing half was never going to be opened.
What does Meltwater cost compared with its competitors?
Meltwater publishes no price. We read meltwater.com/en/pricing on September 1, 2026: it lists four plans named Starter, Pro, Enterprise and Agency, and every one carries a Contact Sales button where the figure should be. Meltwater answers the cost question itself in its pricing FAQ, verbatim: "Meltwater uses tailored pricing rather than a one-size-fits-all list. Your quote is customized to your goals, the modules you choose, and the scale of your program."
Each plan also opens with a capability picker headed Choose Your Capabilities, covering Media Intelligence, Social listening, AI Visibility Tracking and Media Relations, with Influencer Marketing added on the top two plans. That structure is worth understanding before a demo, because it means social listening is a separately selected and unpriced capability rather than something bundled into media monitoring. Buying Meltwater for news coverage does not automatically include it. Our full breakdown of Meltwater pricing and the deeper look at Meltwater media monitoring coverage and cost go through the plan table line by line.
On real contracts, Vendr records a Meltwater median of $25,800 a year, with deals from $5,375 to $56,993 across 126 tracked purchases. That places Meltwater in the middle of its competitive set: above Cision at $12,625 and Talkwalker at $27,370, below Brandwatch at $50,000, and far below Sprinklr at $127,490. If you want the Sprinklr end of the market examined the same way, we mapped the whole field in our guide to Sprinklr competitors and pricing.
The ownership map that quietly ruins Meltwater shortlists
This category has consolidated to the point where a three-vendor bid sheet routinely contains the same company twice. Cision owns both Brandwatch and BuzzSumo, so putting Cision and Brandwatch side by side is not two independent quotes. Hootsuite owns Talkwalker and sells it as Lumen by Talkwalker, so the listening layer inside Hootsuite and the standalone Talkwalker platform are the same technology sold through two doors. Agorapulse owns Mention. Meltwater itself has been private under Marlin Equity Partners and Altor since August 2023 and owns nothing else in the category, and Sprinklr is independent and listed on the NYSE as CXM.
The practical cost of getting this wrong is money. Competitive tension is what produces the 15 to 35 percent discounts Vendr records across these vendors, and two subsidiaries of the same parent do not create it. Check the parent company of every name before you send the RFP, not after. We keep a fuller breakdown of who owns the social listening tools and how the acquisitions stack up.
How do you compare quotes when nobody publishes a price?
Write your requirements once, in your own words, and send the identical document to every vendor. Name the exact module set, seat count, historical data window, regions and languages you need, then ask each vendor to price only that. Vendors scope quotes differently by default, and an unscoped comparison is not a comparison, it is four documents about four different products.
Two details are worth adding to that document. Ask what happens at renewal, because multi-year commitments are where the deepest discounts sit and also where the lock-in sits. And ask for the annual figure in writing rather than a monthly equivalent, since every vendor here bills annually and the invoice that eventually lands with your finance team for approval will be the annual one. Then place one published price beside the quotes so you can see in dollars what the enterprise premium is actually buying. Teams routinely discover at that point that half the modules on the quote were never in the requirements.
Does Meltwater offer a free trial?
No. There is no free trial and no self-serve signup anywhere on meltwater.com. Every route in reads Request a demo, Contact Sales or Talk to an expert. Its enterprise competitors are the same: Cision, Brandwatch and Sprinklr all require a sales conversation, and Sprinklr retired self-serve entirely in April 2026.
Plan around that, because it is often the binding constraint rather than budget. Between demo, scoping, security review, legal and procurement, an enterprise monitoring purchase commonly runs several weeks at minimum. If the reason you are shopping is a thread that started yesterday, no amount of budget shortens that timeline. Among the mid-market suites, Hootsuite offers 14 days with no card and Sprout Social 30 days. Among self-serve tools you can sign up and be looking at your own mentions the same afternoon.
What is the best Meltwater competitor for a small team?
For a team of two to ten people whose job is knowing what is being said and catching problems early, the enterprise tier is the wrong shape regardless of price. The recurring questions are narrow: who mentioned us this morning, has the tone moved since last week, and is anything escalating right now that somebody should look at today. Answering those needs real-time collection, sentiment on every mention and an alert that fires before a customer emails.
EyeOut is built for exactly that job and publishes what it costs: $59 a month billed yearly on Starter, $149 on Growth and $399 on Pro, with seats included on every plan rather than metered. It tracks web, news, X, Reddit, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, forums, podcasts and review sites in one view, scores sentiment, emotion and themes with AI, and runs a crisis radar that baselines each source and grades a genuine spike with a suggested first move. Teams weighing the switch directly can compare it as a Meltwater alternative feature by feature.
The boundary is worth stating plainly, because the honest version of this comparison helps you more than the flattering one. EyeOut has no print clipping service, no broadcast monitoring, no Chinese or Korean social coverage, no journalist database, no newswire distribution and no influencer marketing module. If any of those are genuine requirements, Meltwater or Cision is the correct category and a $59 tool does not replace them. If none of them are, the gap between $708 a year and a $25,800 median contract is not a discount argument, it is a scope argument, and it is one worth making to whoever signs the renewal.
