Short answer: BuzzSumo and Brand24 look similar on a feature list and solve different problems. BuzzSumo is a content research platform, trending topics, top-performing articles, journalist and creator discovery, with brand alerts attached, priced from $199 a month and metered by alert count (2, 5, 10 and 50 alerts across its tiers). Brand24 is a dedicated brand monitoring and social listening tool priced from $199 a month billed annually ($249 monthly), metered by keywords and mentions (3 keywords and 2,000 mentions on the entry plan). Pick BuzzSumo if your job is finding content and journalists. Pick Brand24 if your job is watching what people say about your brand.

The real difference in one paragraph
Both tools index a very large amount of public web and social content, and both will show you mentions of your brand. That shared surface is why they end up on the same shortlist. What differs is what the product is organized around. BuzzSumo is organized around content: what is performing in a topic, which formats work, who writes about a beat, what is trending right now. Monitoring is a feature that sits next to that research. Brand24 is organized around your brand: a stream of mentions across sources, scored for sentiment, with reach and influence metrics and alerting on top. Research is not really the point.
Teams pick wrong when they buy on overlap rather than on the organizing principle. A PR team that wants to know who covers their category is buying BuzzSumo whether or not Brand24 shows more mentions. A comms team that needs to know within the hour that complaints are spiking is buying Brand24 whether or not BuzzSumo has a bigger article index.

Where each one genuinely wins
BuzzSumo wins on research questions. If the sentence you keep saying in meetings starts with "what is working in our category" or "who should we pitch this to", BuzzSumo answers it and Brand24 does not try to. The content analyzer, the topic-level performance data and the journalist database are real strengths built over more than a decade, and no monitoring tool replicates them. Teams doing content strategy and media relations get value from BuzzSumo on day one.
Brand24 wins on monitoring depth. Broader source coverage for the things that damage a brand, forums, podcasts, review sites and newsletters, plus AI summaries, emotion detection and influence scoring on mentions. If the question is "what are people saying about us and is it getting worse", Brand24 is built for that shape and BuzzSumo's alerts are a lighter version of it.
The overlap is real but narrow, and it sits at "tell me when my brand is mentioned in an article." Both do that. Almost everything either tool is actually good at lies outside that intersection.
The metering problem both share
Here is the thing neither pricing page puts up front, and it is the most common reason teams outgrow both tools faster than they budgeted for.
BuzzSumo meters monitoring by alert count. Two alerts on the $199 plan means your brand name and one other thing. A realistic setup, brand name plus variants, two products, your CEO, three competitors, is roughly seven or eight alerts, which puts you on the $499 Suite tier for what most people would call a basic configuration.
Brand24 meters by keywords and mention volume. Three keywords on the entry plan has the same effect from a different direction, and the 2,000 monthly mention cap binds first for any brand with real volume. Reaching twelve keywords costs $399 a month on Pro.
Neither is unreasonable as a business model. The practical consequence is that you should price the configuration you actually need rather than the entry tier, because in both cases the number on the pricing page and the number you will pay are different by a factor of two or more. If your list is twenty terms and you are comparing entry prices, you are comparing numbers that do not apply to you.
What about a third option
The reason this comparison gets searched is usually that someone needs monitoring and is trying to work out which of two well-known tools to buy it from. If that is the situation, it is worth knowing that the metering model is not a law of the category.
EyeOut is a dedicated brand monitoring tool that tracks your brand, products and competitors across web, news, X, Reddit, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, forums, podcasts and review sites in real time, scores sentiment, emotion and clustered themes with AI, and runs a crisis radar that learns each source's normal baseline and grades a genuine spike with a severity level and a suggested first move. It is $59 per month billed yearly, seats are included with no per-seat fee, and monitoring is not gated by alert or keyword count.
The honest boundary: EyeOut does no content research at all. No trending article index, no content analyzer, no journalist database, and it does not publish or distribute anything. If the reason you are looking at BuzzSumo is that research work, EyeOut does not replace it. Detailed breakdowns are on our BuzzSumo alternative and Brand24 alternative pages.
Is BuzzSumo better than Brand24?
Neither is better in general, because they are built for different jobs. BuzzSumo is better for content research, trending topic discovery and finding journalists and creators to pitch. Brand24 is better for brand monitoring itself: broader listening sources, deeper sentiment and emotion analysis, and alerting designed around mention volume rather than a fixed alert allowance.
Does BuzzSumo do brand monitoring?
Yes, through keyword and brand alerts including unlinked mention alerts, with coverage reporting and Slack delivery on higher plans. The constraint is that alerts are metered per tier, from two on the entry plan up to fifty on Enterprise, so a brand tracking several products and competitors hits the limit quickly and the tier positioned for monitoring starts at $299 a month.
How much do BuzzSumo and Brand24 cost?
BuzzSumo publishes $199 a month for Content Creation (1 user, 2 alerts), $299 for PR and Comms (5 users, 5 alerts), $499 for Suite (10 users, 10 alerts) and $999 for Enterprise (30 users, 50 alerts), with annual billing discounts. Brand24 publishes $199 a month annually for Individual (3 keywords, 2,000 mentions), $299 Team, $399 Pro (12 keywords, 40,000 mentions), $599 Business and Enterprise from $1,499. Prices checked July 2026.
Which should a small team choose?
If you have one job to do and a limited budget, choose by the job rather than splitting the difference. A small content or PR team that needs research and pitching gets more from BuzzSumo, and the alert allowance is enough to keep a light eye on the brand alongside it. A small comms or founder-led team that needs to know when something is being said gets more from a monitoring-first tool, and at that size the keyword ceiling on entry monitoring plans is the thing to check before you sign, not the headline price.
Do you need both?
Some teams genuinely do, and it is worth being clear about when. If content research drives your pipeline and reputation risk is material to your business, the two tools are not substitutes and running both is a defensible line item. The more common situation is that one of the two jobs is real and the other is aspirational, in which case buying both means paying twice for a feature overlap you use once a quarter. Teams that lean heavily on the research half often end up pairing it with something that turns that research into published articles rather than with a second monitoring tool, because the bottleneck after research is production, not more data.
The decision, compressed
Buy BuzzSumo if your primary question is about content and coverage: what performs, what is trending, who to pitch. Buy Brand24 if your primary question is about your brand: who is talking, in what tone, and is it changing. Price the configuration you actually need in both cases, because entry tiers on both products are narrower than they look. And if the answer is that you only ever needed monitoring, check whether you need to be paying $199 to $399 a month for it at all.
